Robert Dillingham, a 5-star prospect in
the 2023 college basketball recruiting class, announced Saturday he’s
decided to decommit from NC State.
Dillingham, who verbally committed to
the Wolfpack in December, said the program remains an option as he
restarts the recruitment process:
The standout point guard announced his
selection of NC State on Dec. 1.
Three weeks later, the NCAA handed down
penalties to the program through its new Independent Accountability
Resolution Process for allegedly facilitating a $40,000 payment to
then-prized prospect Dennis Smith Jr. in October 2015.
The violations, which took place under
former head coach Mark Gottfried, led to one year of probation, a
loss of one scholarship and recruiting restrictions for the men’s
basketball program.
NC State just finished its fifth season
under current coach Kevin Keatts, going 11-21 with a 4-16 mark in ACC
play.
Dillingham didn’t state a specific
reason for reevaluating his options.
The 6’2”, 165-pound Donda Academy star
should attract plenty of interest as the No. 9 overall player in
the 2023 class and the top-ranked point guard in next year’s group,
according to 247Sports‘ composite rankings.
“I’m a playmaker and a leader and
just a point guard for real,” Dillingham told Jacob Polacheck of
Zags Blog when asked about his game in November.
Auburn, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis and
North Carolina were among the high-profile programs that offered him a
scholarship before he chose NC State, per 247Sports.
He’ll likely need to add a little more
weight to withstand the rigors of college and eventually pro
basketball, but otherwise he’s shown all the signs of being an
instant-impact player by the time he arrives to the college ranks for
the 2023-24 season.
Dillingham didn’t provide a timetable
for a new decision.
