In addition to further cementing himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has significant financial incentive to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.

According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Mahomes’ contract dictates that he will be paid an additional $1.25 million if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl.

Jones also noted that Mahomes, who signed a 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs in 2020, is likely to restructure his contract once again this coming offseason to get more upfront cash and create salary cap space for the team.

By his standards, Mahomes had a bit of a down year during the regular season, completing 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. It was a far cry from his 2022 NFL MVP campaign when he completed 67.1 percent of his passing attempts and led the league with 5,250 passing yards and 41 passing touchdowns.

The Chiefs also went only 11-6 and earned the No. 3 seed in the AFC, which forced them to go on the road in the Divisional Round and AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes had never played a true playoff road game during his career despite 2023 being his sixth year as a starter, but it didn’t matter, as the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 27-24 in the Divisional Round and the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the AFC title game.

The Chiefs and Mahomes rose to the occasion and played their best football of the season during the playoffs, and now they will play in their fourth Super Bowl in the past five years.

If Kansas City wins, it will mark Mahomes’ third Super Bowl win as a starting quarterback, putting him in elite company.

Only Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana have won more than three Super Bowls, while a third ring would tie Mahomes with Troy Aikman.

The 49ers, led by quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey and an elite defense, have a chance to play spoiler, however.

If the Niners are victorious, it will mark their first Super Bowl win since the 1994 season and their sixth in franchise history.
