This season’s crop of new arrivals plays with proportion in interesting ways, bringing a freshened-up feel to some classic fall styles. It’s a good time to experiment: For example, if you lived in slouchy sweaters all last year, you might consider a more fitted, feminine silhouette for fall ’23. If the denim maxiskirt was your jam, something with a shorter hemline might make your looks feel more current. These, and three other styles to try below.

THE SHRUNKEN SWEATER

More feminine than their slouchy counterparts, this season’s shrunken knits are still plenty cozy, especially when done in soft virgin wool like the G. Label options here. Two of our favorite ways to wear them: layered over a slim button-up (with dark denim, loafers, and a structured shoulder bag) or paired with a lower-rise skirt or pant for a slightly cooler look.

THE CIGARETTE PANTS

They can either be straight through the entire leg or fitted through the thighs and tapered toward the hem, hitting right at (or even slightly above) the anklebone. Balance the slim cut with something substantial on top, like a chunky knit, a billowy button-up, or an oversize blazer.

THE MINISKIRT

You don’t want just any miniskirt: Look for one that’s slightly structured and ends at about midthigh (this length looks great with tall boots, yes, but also loafers or brogues). Then offset the coquettish hemline with a prim cardigan or an edgy leather bomber jacket with exaggerated proportions.

THE DEMI-WIDE LEG

If you’ve ever looked at a pair of wide-legs and thought, Wow, that’s a lot of fabric, then consider this updated cut. Equally cool but much more wearable, these pants complement everything from blouses and ankle boots to your favorite cashmere sweater and sneakers.

THE CHUNKY KNIT

From sleeves and cuffs to collars and necklines, sumptuous ribbing is everywhere this season. We’re especially into the Figliozzi sweater from this month’s G. Label drop—those knuckle-grazing sleeves are just so good. The swingy body and slightly cropped hem mean anything high-waisted will work here.
